Thieves Stole Nearly $9M in Goods Over Past Five Labor Day Weekends
Nearly $9 millionworth of goods have been stolen in 179 cargo theft incidents across the U.S. during the Labor Day holiday from 2019 to 2023, between the Thursday before Labor Day and the Wednesday after. With an average loss of more than $162,000 per incident, the record number of thefts was reported in 2022, according to CargoNet, a Verisk business.

Biden-Harris Administration Invests Millions in Driver Training
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has announced grants totaling nearly $3.5 million to fund new truck driver training programs. The funds will be directed to 27 colleges and other commercial driver’s license (CDL) training programs through the agency’s Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) Grant Program.

What to Do After a Cargo Theft Incident
Cargo theft jumped 33% during the second quarter compared to Q2 last year. The new data is a reminder that fleets need to focus not only on preventing theft but also being prepared for what to do after it happens, according to Keith Lewis, CargoNet’s VP of operations. In a recent TCA webinar, he discussed how trucking companies often struggle when trying to report cargo theft to law enforcement. This difficulty can stem from several reasons.

California Legislators Pushing for Driverless Autonomous Truck Ban
California lawmakers have once again successfully passed legislation that would ban driverless autonomous trucks from operating in the state. Last year’s attempt, of course, was vetoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The legislation will once again make its way to his desk for a signature, but it’s unclear whether he has changed his stance in the last 12 months.
