Best practices for print magazines

When preparing artwork for print, understanding bleed, trim, and live areas is essential. These three zones ensure your ad prints cleanly, looks professional, and avoids accidental cut-offs.

Bleed Area
The bleed is the extra space that extends beyond the final trim size—usually 1/8 inch (0.125″) on all sides. Extend backgrounds, images, and any elements meant to run to the edge of the page into this area. Bleed ensures that small cutting shifts during production don’t leave unwanted white borders.

Trim Area
The trim is the exact final size of your printed ad after it’s cut. Anything placed exactly on the trim line may shift slightly in the final product, so avoid putting text or critical design elements right on this edge.

Live Area
The live area is a safe zone inside the trim, typically .25 inch from the edge. Keep all important content—logos, headlines, body copy—within this space. This protects key elements from being trimmed and maintains a clean, balanced layout.

All relevant information is within .25 inches from the edge to ensure these elements won’t be trimmed or cut-off.
