Transportation Security Screening Modernization Act Now Law

President Joe Biden last week signed The Transportation Security Screening Modernization Act, “a bipartisan victory for common sense,” according to ATA President & CEO Chris Spear, whose organization has championed the bill that bill that allows workers to apply existing valid background checks to multiple credentialing programs managed by the Transportation Security Administration, such as the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HME) programs.

A report by IBM and the Ponemon Institute says the average data breach cost for a small business with fewer than 500 employees is $2.98 million. There are ways to guard against an attack, including technological safety nets, employee training and insurance policies.


CVSA Announces Dates for 2025 Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative

CVSA’s annual five-day human trafficking awareness, outreach, identification, and prevention initiative educates commercial motor vehicle drivers, motor carriers, law enforcement officers, and the general public about human trafficking. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has set the dates for next year’s Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative for each of its three member countries. In the U.S., the initiative is scheduled for January 13-17, 2025. 


On-the-job Fatalities Highest Among Truckers

Although workplace fatalities among truck drivers are trending downward, the job of a trucker remains one of the most dangerous in the United States. That’saccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries report, which breaks down the number of workplace fatalities for 2023. As in previous years, truck drivers and other transportation workers rank among the highest fatalities of all private sector employees. Workplace fatalities claimed the lives of 823 heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in 2023.


Cost Reduction is a Top Priority for Shippers and Carriers in 2025

Report Says The majority of respondents (61%) said cost reduction is a major focus for next year, particularly for shippers at 76%, compared to carriers and 3PLs at 52%. The report indicated that shippers are likely to focus more on cost reduction efforts due to expected increases in rates, cost pressures from environmental regulations and global trade tariffs.


How Trucking Can Combat Human Trafficking in 2025 

As truck drivers transport goods across the U.S., spending hours upon hours on highways and at truck stops, they’re uniquely positioned to witness, help, and report human trafficking. According to TAT, of the estimated 50 million victims worldwide, thousands of girls, boys, women, and men are trafficked for sex or labor in the U.S. and Canada. Traffickers recruit victims out of schools, online, malls, the streets, and other locations. Most of the people trafficked are women and children, many of which are used in the sex industry and prostituted on the street, in private homes, and at legitimate businesses, such as restaurants, truck stops, and motels.



Clearinghouse Phase II: Make Sure Your Team Understands the Latest FMCSA Testing Requirements

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse has unquestionably achieved much of its intended purpose. The burden of chasing down former employers of drivers in an effort to obtain drug and alcohol testing results has changed drastically. The required information is now just a query away in the Clearinghouse. Phase II now in effect. A second final ruling, known as “Clearinghouse II,” took effect on November 18, 2024.


California Abandons Advanced Clean Fleets Rule 

The California Air Resources Board has withdrawn its request for the waiver it would need from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its controversial Advanced Clean Fleets regulation, since it’s unlikely to get approval from the incoming Trump administration.


FMCSA’s Random Drug-Testing Rate for 2025

For Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration-regulated workers, the random drug testing rate will remain at 50%, while the random alcohol testing rate will remain at 10%. FMCSA’s random testing rate last changed in 2020. This means that carriers are required to perform random drug tests at a rate equivalent to half their number of drivers in the calendar year. This includes the number of leased owner-operators a carrier contracts with, as well as owner-operators in a testing consortium.


FMCSA Revokes Registrations of Six ELDs

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on Wednesday announced the removal of six devices from the agency’s list of registered electronic logging devices (ELDs). The revoked devices include: Blue Star ELD, United ELD, Speed ELD, TrackEnsure ELD (two different software versions) Road Star Solutions. The six newly-revoked devices add to a growing list of devices placed on the Revoked Devices list in recent months, bringing the total to 15 since mid-November.
