Thieves Stole Nearly $9M in Goods Over Past Five Labor Day Weekends

Nearly $9 millionworth of goods have been stolen in 179 cargo theft incidents across the U.S. during the Labor Day holiday from 2019 to 2023, between the Thursday before Labor Day and the Wednesday after. With an average loss of more than $162,000 per incident, the record number of thefts was reported in 2022, according to CargoNet, a Verisk business.

Carrier Input Needed for Driver Detention Study

As part of ongoing research on the impact of driver detention, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute is asking for 60 carriers to participate in a study funded by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association.

Are Driver-Facing Cameras Becoming a Necessity?

Dash cameras have been on the market for years now – many of which offer a driver-facing video solution in addition to road-facing video, which has become pretty standard in the cab of a truck as fleets seek to improve safety, exonerate themselves in accidents and lower insurance costs. According to data from the annual CarriersEdgeBest Fleets to Drive For survey and contest, only 21% of finalists use inward-facing cameras.

Biden-Harris Administration Invests Millions in Driver Training

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has announced grants totaling nearly $3.5 million to fund new truck driver training programs. The funds will be directed to 27 colleges and other commercial driver’s license (CDL) training programs through the agency’s Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) Grant Program.

Six Core Challenges Deterring Women from Entering Trucking

New research released this summer by the American Transportation Research Institute identifies key challenges, proposes practical solutions, and establishes best practices for women truck drivers, addressing both entry barriers and ongoing issues in the industry.

Gloves off: Trucking Industry Fights to Stop EPA’s Strict Emissions Rules

Fighting the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) strict new rules on emissions is at the top of almost every trucking executive’s to-do list right now. Back in April, the Biden administration finalized new federal emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles, including commercial vehicles. Many in the industry contend that the rules will be a financial “gut punch” to smaller trucking operations and independent owners because of increased equipment costs and upkeep expenses.

What to Do After a Cargo Theft Incident

Cargo theft jumped 33% during the second quarter compared to Q2 last year. The new data is a reminder that fleets need to focus not only on preventing theft but also being prepared for what to do after it happens, according to Keith Lewis, CargoNet’s VP of operations. In a recent TCA webinar, he discussed how trucking companies often struggle when trying to report cargo theft to law enforcement. This difficulty can stem from several reasons.

Are Driver Cameras Hindering Workforce Recruitment?

While many trucking companies have had success with the launch of road-facing cameras, their drivers still tend to balk at the idea of driver-facing cameras. Though cameras have been hyped as a retention tool, fleets have lost drivers upon installation, as well as lost potential drivers before they ever got behind the wheel.

California Legislators Pushing for Driverless Autonomous Truck Ban

California lawmakers have once again successfully passed legislation that would ban driverless autonomous trucks from operating in the state. Last year’s attempt, of course, was vetoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The legislation will once again make its way to his desk for a signature, but it’s unclear whether he has changed his stance in the last 12 months.
