Report Shows Truck Driver Shortage Costs Freight Industry $95.5 Million Weekly
A shortage of an estimated 24,000 truck drivers is leaving many trucks idle, costing the freight industry $95.5 million every week, according to a report by factoring service altLine. According to its estimates, the industry could generate $47.4 billion in annual revenue if all registered trucks were operational.
FHWA Suspends Grant Program for EV Chargers
In a Feb. 6 letter to state Department of Transportation leaders, FHWA Associate Administrator Emily Biondi said new DOT leadership “has decided to review the policies underlying the implementation of the NEVI Formula Program,” and is rescinding guidance related to the program, thus suspending the approval of all State Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment plans for all fiscal years.
What Looming Tariffs Mean for Carriers and Consumers
Canada and Mexico earned a 30-day reprieve following promises to secure their borders against the flow of illicit drugs and illegal immigrants, but considering trucks move 85% of goods across the southern U.S. border and 67% of goods across the northern border, U.S. motor carriers are exposed to the fallout of these tariffs even if cross-border isn’t part of their business.
Bill Would Give FMCSA ‘Teeth’ to Combat Freight Fraud
Freight fraud is estimated to cost the trucking industry $800 million each year. A bill in the House and Senate would empower the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to address the problem. The Household Goods Shipping Consumer Protection Act would restore FMCSA’s authority to issue civil penalties against bad actors. The legislation also would require brokers, freight forwarders and carriers to provide a valid business address to FMCSA before acquiring operating authority.
DAT: Spot Market Rates Dip Despite Demand for Trucks
Demand for trucks on the spot market typically rise at the end of a month as shippers clear their docks, according to DAT. The total number of loads posted on DAT One increased by 4% in the final week of January compared to the previous week. The total number of trucks posted rose almost 6%, and weekly average rates declined. All rates are weekly average linehaul spot rates (net fuel).

How New Trump Tariffs Could Affect Trucking
“As the trucking industry recovers from a years-long freight recession marked by low freight volumes, depressed rates, and rising operational costs, we have concern that tariffs could decrease freight volumes and increase costs for motor carriers at a time when the industry is just beginning to recover,” said American Trucking Associations President & CEO Chris Spear in a statement.
New Survey Focuses on Truck Parking at Public Rest Areas
The American Transportation Research Institute is turning to truckers for feedback on several key issues surrounding truck parking at public rest areas. For its Public Truck Parking Driver Survey, the group said it is working with departments of transportation in all 50 states to “identify best practices for expanding truck parking at public rest areas and other state-owned locations.” The brief, 12-question survey seeks input on the following approaches used by states to address parking: The Public Truck Parking Driver Survey can be completed online here.
59% of Drivers Say They Earned Less in 2024 than in 2023
Driver pay remained a top concern in recruiting and retention, with 59% of drivers reporting they earned less in 2024 than in 2023. Transparent and predictable pay structures were the most common reasons drivers sought new opportunities, while inconsistent miles and non-competitive pay rates continued to be leading causes of voluntary turnover.
How Trump is Changing Emissions Standards This Year
Trump’s first day as president kickstarted a radical shift in climate policy that will impact commercial carriers’ operating costs. Industry experts predict the new administration will weaken emissions standards, challenge CARB’s waivers, and promote domestic oil production.
FMCSA Task Force Urges Elimination of Truck Lease-Purchase Plans
“Congress should ban CMV lease-purchase agreements as irredeemable tools of fraud and driver oppression that threaten a safe national transportation system and diminish the number of truck drivers attracted to and who stay in the trucking industry.”
